Sticky Honey Garlic Wings

Chicken wings are fantastic for any occasion – be it game day or a speedy dinner. Their crispy texture and juicy meat make them a go-to choice, and the timeless appeal of honey garlic wings, with their perfect mix of sweet and savory, adds a classic touch that never fails to satisfy.

Honey Garlic Wings Ingredients and Ingredient Notes

Chicken Wings Ingredients

Chicken Wings: Ensure they are thawed, and patted dry for the best crispy texture.

Salt & Black Pepper: Season the wings to taste.

Olive Oil – use this to help the salt and pepper to stick as well as aid in the crispy exterior.

Honey Garlic Sauce

Honey: Opt for natural honey for a rich and authentic sweetness.

Soy Sauce: Use low-sodium soy sauce to control the dish’s saltiness.

Garlic: Adjust the quantity based on your preference for garlic flavour.

Sesame Oil: Enhances the overall flavour with a nutty aroma.

Rice Vinegar: Adds a subtle tanginess to complement the sweetness.

Tips for the Best Honey Garlic Wings

Prep for Crispy Wings: Ensure the chicken wings are thoroughly dried before seasoning or coating to achieve a crispy texture. Pat them dry with paper towels, especially if using baking powder for the oven or air frying method.

Perfectly Golden: Whether air frying, baking, or deep frying, maintain a consistent temperature. For oven-baked or air-fried wings, flipping halfway through ensures an even and golden brown cook. For deep frying, monitor the oil temperature to achieve that satisfying crunch.

Sauce Consistency: Pay attention to the honey garlic sauce’s consistency. Stir continuously while heating to avoid burning and achieve a smooth, thick sauce. If needed, use the cornstarch slurry method mentioned to reach the desired thickness.

Serve Fresh and Hot: Toss the wings in the honey garlic sauce immediately before serving to maintain maximum crispiness. Serve them hot, whether as an appetizer, main course, or party snack and enjoy!

Storage and Reheating Instructions

Oven (Recommended for Crispy Texture): Preheat to 375°F and bake for 10-15 minutes.

Air Fryer: Preheat to 375°F and air fry for 5-8 minutes.

Microwave: Heat in 30-second intervals until warmed through. While this method is convenient, the microwave can make the wings lose their crispiness.

Stovetop (Pan or Skillet): Reheat in a skillet with a bit of oil until heated.

Ingredients

Chicken Wings

  • 2 lb Chicken Wings, split or whole
  • Salt and Pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 tsp Baking Powder, if oven baking or air frying (if frying use 1/2 cup flour, 1/4 cup cornstarch)

Sticky Honey Garlic Sauce

  • 1/2 cup Honey
  • 6 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup Low Sodium Soy Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1 tbsp Sesame Oil
  • 1 tbsp Rice Wine Vinegar, or apple cider vinegar, or any white vinegar

Instructions

Air Fried Honey Garlic Wings

Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, combine chicken wings, salt, black pepper, and baking powder. Toss until wings are evenly coated.

Place the wings in the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Air fry for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the wings are golden and crispy.

Oven Baked Honey Garlic Wings

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, mix chicken wings, salt, black pepper, and baking powder until well combined.

Arrange the wings on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they are evenly spaced. Bake for 45-50 minutes, turning halfway through, until wings are golden and crispy.

Deep Fried Honey Garlic Wings

In a bowl, season chicken wings with salt, and black pepper. In a separate bowl, combine flour and cornstarch. Coat each wing in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.

In a deep fryer or large skillet, heat oil to 375°F (190°C). Fry wings in batches for 10-12 minutes or until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels or a wired rack.

Sticky Honey Garlic Wings

Heat a saucepan over medium heat and combine soy sauce, water, honey, minced garlic, rice wine vinegar, and sesame oil. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes or see notes section on how to thicken with cornstarch slurry.

Toss the wings in the prepared honey garlic sauce and ensure even coating. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

To Thicken Sauce: combine 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water in a bowl to make a cornstarch slurry. Gradually add slurry to simmering sauce, stirring continuously until the desired thickness is reached.

Gluten-free & soy-free: To make the honey garlic chicken wings gluten-free, use low sodium tamari or coconut aminos instead of soy sauce.

Baking powder: Don't substitute the baking powder with baking soda! It changes the flavor of the dish and definitely doesn't taste good.

Air fryer method: You can use an air fryer instead of your oven to bake the chicken wings. You can find more information in the post.

Cornstarch slurry: Mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to make the cornstarch slurry.
